The principal advantage of the Gemini™ analyzer is the complementary nature of Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. Certain substances respond more effectively to Raman analysis, while others are more readily identified using FTIR. Integrating both techniques into a single instrument enables users to analyse a broader range of materials without carrying two separate instruments into the field.
Raman analysis can, in many cases, be performed through transparent or translucent containers, reducing the need for direct sample handling. FTIR uses a single-bounce diamond ATR crystal and a motorised pressure anvil and is particularly useful for direct analysis of solids and liquids requiring contact with the crystal. Scan Assist helps operators determine which technology to use and guides them through the sampling process.
The instrument also incorporates functions specifically designed for potentially hazardous environments. Scan Delay can postpone the start of either Raman or FTIR measurements, enabling the operator to move away from the hazard area before scanning begins. The interface combines a glove-compatible resistive touchscreen, large tactile keypad and customisable profiles that allow scanning parameters to be adapted to the sample or operating scenario.
The LowDoseID capability, combined with SERS – Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, extends Gemini analysis to selected substances present at low concentrations. It is particularly aimed at identifying certain narcotics in mixtures where the concentration of the target compound may be too low for conventional Raman or FTIR analysis.
